Architects Insurance

South East Region

The Code of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) requires Architects to have adequate and appropriate insurance cover.

The responsibility is on the Architect to ensure that the level of indemnity maintained is appropriate for the scale and nature of work undertaken. In any event the ARB requires Architects to hold a limit of indemnity of no less than £250,000.

Key Considerations

  • ARB requirement to maintain professional indemnity insurance.
  • Professional indemnity insurance designed to cover both claims against you and defence costs for mistakes you make whilst undertaking professional services.
  • ARB requires minimum of £250,000 but it’s the Architects responsibility to ensure level maintained is appropriate.
  • Circumstances in which claims arise vary substantially so consideration must be given to the scale and nature of work undertaken.
  • Question of what limit of indemnity to hold should be made whilst considering what is the degree of loss that might result from an error on any scheme.
  • Professional negligence claims can result is substantial settlements and legal costs which can far exceed the project value.
